Mission Department (general board)
The Mission Department is at the heart of the Baptist Union of Great Britain. By ‘mission’ we mean reaching out to people in the name of Jesus. This may involve evangelism and church planting, community projects, political and social issues, youth, children’s and third age (senior) ministries and mission and much more.
Our Purpose
We aim to equip associations, colleges and churches of the Baptist Union to fulfil their God-given mission. We seek to do this in partnership with colleges, associations, churches and others.
Our Primary Objectives are:
Developing tools for churches of the Union
Turning research into resources
Facilitating networks, initiatives and mission happenings
Offering a national strategic mission perspective in co-operation with other Baptist Union
departments and associations
Being a co-ordinating centre of activity
Working through the associations and colleges to the churches

Foundation: (Listening, Collating and Speaking)
The Foundation is the part of the department that deals with research and gathers information, which will then be used by the rest of the team when coming up with resources and strategy. We gather information through…
- Annual statistics gathered from the 2000+ churches within the Baptist Union
- Speaking with a broad range of people involved in Baptist life and beyond
- We are looking to map the presence of the churches looking especially at where churches are in terms of levels of deprivation and population density.
- We also collect data regarding research that has been done and needs doing, through the colleges and others. We seek to be up to date on our understanding of key areas of new research in regard to missional thinking and practice.
All this information is used to inform the work of the department and the priorities and strategy of the Union.

Mission: The Hub (Resource ongoing mission)
The Hub is a central support for various initiatives and networks. We hope that this will enable churches and individuals to make connections through networks to people in similar situations. We are committed to developing key projects that will equip the churches and associations of the Union and enable churches to be supported in their mission to make Jesus known through word and deed.

Mission: Envision (Inspiring young Baptists)
Through Envision, we are working towards developing strategies for the development of relevant tools and resources to enable churches to be successful in their mission to reach children and young people with the truth of the gospel. We long to see many children and young people coming to faith and living this out as disciples. We also seek to encourage young leadership in both the local church and the Union as a whole.

Mission: The Edge (Encouraging, enabling and embracing new and risky mission)
Through The Edge we have made a commitment to explore the new things God is doing on the leading edge of mission, like incubating new ways of being church, church planting and engaging with the emerging church movement. We are also developing a time out scheme to enable Baptists of all ages to engage in mission placements, sometimes in the hard places. We are delighted to be working with LICC on a project looking at “Encouraging Missionary Disciples”
